What Is A Wine Tasting Wheel?

Custom Search

The wine tasting wheel is a wonderful learning tool to help expand the wine tasting vocabulary of a beginner or even expert. One of the most attractive and remarkable things about wine is that it can have such a wide variety of flavors and

aromas. It is often hard to find the right words to describe what you are smelling and tasting, and that is where the wheel can come in handy.

There are different versions of wheels, but they generally show various categories of aromas and flavors around the inside of the wheel, with subcategories further out, and nearly 100 specific descriptive words still further out. The main categories include terms like fruity, floral, spicy, earthy, etcetera.

Each wine is made up of a combination of aromas and flavors, varying in complexity. After tasting a wine, perusing the wheel helps clarify those aromas you are detecting, but can't quite put a finger on. As your wine vocabulary increases, it will be easier to describe wines to others.

In this video, Ann Noble, an Emeritus Professor of the UC Davis Department of Enology, talks about the Wine Aroma Wheel, which she invented:

In this next video, Part 2, she shows how to use the Wine Aroma Wheel:

Wine tasting wheels don't portray all the possible flavors and aromas imaginable, but they help to expand your ability to describe the nuances. The more wine tasting you do, the more you will be able to notice subtle differences between each varietal, each vintage, each winemaker and/or each region.

If you are hosting a wine tasting, it might be fun to pass out the wheels to everyone to use. You can find wine wheels for sale at the UC Davis bookstore. (University of California at Davis is famous for its enology department).
