Touring Monterey County Wineries
Three Areas From Which To Base Your Wine Tour
Monterey County wineries can be divided up into three sections: Monterey, Carmel Valley and Salinas (including points south along the 101). This listing will help you plan your wine country tour. The following are tasting rooms of Monterey County wineries, which are not always necessarily located at the winery or vineyards.

MontereyMonterey is most well known for Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The downtown has a walking tour of historic buildings. A few wine tasting rooms are conveniently located right on Cannery Row. View Monterey Wineries in a larger map

Carmel ValleySeveral Monterey County wineries are found in the Carmel Valley area, a bit out of the way, but well worth the drive, especially as a side trip from Monterey or Carmel, if that's where you are staying. A short drive inland from unbelievably charming Carmel-by-the-Sea is Carmel Valley, a small, almost rural village in the hills. Along the way is Garland Regional Park, a beautiful place to hike and explore. Up in the village are some fine eating establishments where you can get some lunch, and some wine tasting rooms to visit. Others are further outside of town. A relaxing way to go wine tasting in Carmel Valley is to take the Grapevine Express wine tour bus. You can pick it up at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and for about $4.50, it will take you to Carmel Valley Village. Call 888-678-2871 to find out more. Here is a map and listings of wineries in the area. Salinas And Points SouthAlong the Highway 101 corridor, you'll find some more Monterey County wineries. The agricultural heritage of the Salinas Valley has been immortalized by writer John Steinbeck. The Santa Lucia Highlands appellation is located on the range facing southeast overlooking the Salinas River Valley. Most grapes planted in these vineyards are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but there are also some Syrah and Rhone varietals. View Salinas and Points South Wineries in a larger map
More Monterey County wineries are popping up here and there in amongst the farms. In addition to tasting wine at any of these, you may want to stop in at the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas to learn more about Steinbeck's work and the Salinas Valley.
