Decanting Wine

Here's a short video piece on properly decanting wine. It shows two gentlemen on a sofa, while one demonstrates how to decant a bottle of red wine.

The main purpose of decanting red wine is not only to aerate it, but to also leave as much of the sediment behind as possible. Sediment isn't much of a problem with young wines, but can be with older, aging wine.

These days, the benefit of decanting young wines is mainly just to expose it to as much air as possible in the decanting process, so as to help the flavor.

If a bottle has been lying on its side for ten years or so, stand it slowly upright. Let it sit like this, until the cloudiness or muddiness settles towards the bottom. Slowly tip it into the decanter, until most of the clear part is out, leaving most of the gritty bits behind.
