Visiting the Calistoga wineries and spas aren't all there is to do here. A little ways north, off Highway 29, you can visit this natural phenomenon. The water bursts forth from an underground river heated up by hot molten lava deep within the earth's surface.

Once there, you can visit the geothermal exhibit hall, take a self-guided tour, and wait for the towering spurt of 350 degree scalding water. It got it's name because it goes off at regular intervals. There are only three geysers by this name in the whole world. This one generally erupts to a height of 50-100 feet!

You can expect it to go off every 45 minutes, and while you're waiting, you can browse the exhibit or gift shop. Supposedly, the only time the geyser is irregular is when an earthquake is imminent.

While you are waiting, you can also enjoy the picnic area, snack bar and the "fainting goats".

The geyser is open to spectators daily from 9 to 6. They charge an admission of $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $3 for kids ages 6-12. For more information, you can call 707-942-6463.

Don't forget your camera!
