California Wine Clubs

This guide to California wine clubs will help you get started sifting through a sea of choices. There are big and small online wine clubs plus local wine clubs at wineries all over the country and abroad, so unless you visited a winery yourself and fell in love with their wine, you may be daunted by all the possibilities.

If you enjoy the intimate experience of wine tasting at a winery on your vacation and learning all about their wines and taking their tour, you may want to join their own wine club. If you live a reasonable distance away or plan to visit now and then, you can partake in special events at that winery for members only, such as private reserve tastings or maybe wine food pairings.

Robby Schrum, a regular contributor to the daily wine blog Terroirist.com, has this to say about joining wine clubs:

"I'm a member of four wine clubs -- three of which I joined when visiting wineries in California and one of which I joined after receiving a solicitation in the mail. I've enjoyed being a member of the three winery-based clubs because each shipment brings me back to my initial visit to the winery and serves as a pleasant reminder of a great experience there. I've only joined clubs at wineries where I had a particularly memorable visit -- and of course, where I really liked the wines.

From my vantage point, the biggest pros to wine club membership include knowing that you'll receive a selection of very good wines on a regular basis. I've also enjoyed having wine delivered directly to me; I don't have to visit the liquor or grocery store to have a wide variety of wine on hand.The cons include the momentary shock when the charge for the wine shipment shows up on your credit-card bill -- but that's not really a con at all!"
